# About Comet Chatter

A handful of free, no-sign-up tools for the fiddly part of posting: making the words fit.

## What it does

Every social platform counts text its own way, and most composers only tell you the number once you are already over. Comet Chatter shows the length of one post on X, Threads, Bluesky, Mastodon, LinkedIn, Instagram and YouTube side by side, splits long text into a numbered thread, makes Unicode bold and italic text (with an honest note about what it does to accessibility), tidies hashtags and keeps the blank lines in Instagram captions.

## How it works

Each tool is a web page that does its work in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type is uploaded, there is no account, and the pages keep working if your connection drops after they load. The [privacy page](https://cometchatter.buzz/privacy/) lists exactly what is stored and where.

The counts follow each platform's published rules. X posts are measured with twitter-text, the open-source library X publishes for exactly this. Bluesky's link shortening follows the open-source code of the Bluesky app. Threads, Mastodon, LinkedIn, Instagram and YouTube limits come from their own documentation and help pages, all listed in the [sources on the counter page](https://cometchatter.buzz/#sources). The limits were last checked in October 2026; platforms change them from time to time, and their own pages have the final say.

## What it is not

Comet Chatter is not affiliated with X, Meta, Bluesky, Mastodon, LinkedIn, Instagram or YouTube, and it cannot post for you. It is an independent site; the two services in the footer and on the home page, CleanTempMail and WebTraceCheck, are recommended because they are useful around posting, not because of any partnership claim.
